What is BrightHop?
BrightHop is an Australian learning website for primary-school children in Years 1–6, built for parents. It does one thing in a fixed order: find the exact gap, teach that skill, retest, and say what to learn next.
Who it is for
Parents of Australian primary-school children who want to know which specific Maths or English skill to work on, rather than guessing. Children do not create accounts; parents do.
What a Skill Check does
A Skill Check is a short, free check on one topic, such as addition. It takes about three minutes, needs no account and uses new questions each time. It mixes question forms so that a gap in one part of a topic is not hidden by strength in another. It is an informal check to help you decide what to practise, not a formal assessment. Browse the free Skill Checks.
Diagnose, teach, retest
- The check shows which part of a topic is shaky and the kind of mistake behind a wrong answer.
- A short lesson with a worked example teaches that skill, followed by a question to try.
- A short retest with no hints shows whether it stuck.
- The result suggests one skill to work on next, with the reason.
How recommendations are chosen
Every topic is linked to the earlier skills it builds on. If a skill is weak and something it depends on is also weak, the earlier skill is recommended first; otherwise the weak skill is reteaught; then reviews; then new skills. The same answers always give the same recommendation, and the reason is shown to the parent. See how to know what maths skill to learn next.
Subjects and content
Maths, English and reasoning for Years 1–6, across 292 topics linked to Australian Curriculum (Version 9) content descriptions. The free public Skill Checks cover a smaller set of Maths and English topics, listed on the Skill Check page.
How it differs from worksheets
A worksheet practises a skill you have already chosen. BrightHop helps choose the skill and explains wrong answers. Worksheets still suit repetition once a skill is secure; see BrightHop vs worksheets.
What BrightHop does not claim
- It does not guarantee a mark, rank or result.
- Its Skill Checks are informal, not formal assessments, and are not official NAPLAN tests.
- It is not a replacement for a teacher or a tutor.
- Its guides are its own teaching approach, not official curriculum guidance.
Privacy and safety
The free Skill Checks need no account. Children never sign in. Analytics records page-level events only and never a child’s answers or anything typed. Read the Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
